Mischief

Posted on | December 17, 2005 |

It seemed a little too quiet. I was in the dining room (which serves double duty as my office) and Bean was in the living room—within earshot, but just out of sight. For five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen minutes, only silence. An occasional grunt or rustle let me know he was still alive—but there were no shrieks, no customary giggles or roars. And you know—it’s probably terrible that I didn’t jump up immediately, and instead thought “I wonder how much I can get done before he starts making noise.” Yes, I imagined the possibilities. Even the worst, when weighed against fifteen minutes of undivided (quiet) time to finish writing xmas cards, print pictures, and wrap presents, was just not terrible enough.

Finally I heard a giggle, and then the fwapity-fwap sounds of him crawling away from the scene of the crime. This is what I found. I didn’t have time to adjust the iso so the pictures came out all blurry. But they probably would have come out blurry anyway. I couldn’t stop laughing. He STUFFED THE TISSUES UP THE FRONT OF HIS SWEATER, people. All by himself. How funny is that? And the wreckage of the tissue box (and my living room)? It was TOTALLY WORTH IT.

I’ve learned to worry when it gets quiet, that’s for sure. HAHAHA! That Bean! He even looks cute when he’s up to “no good.” (grin)

I love this. Many, many similar memories. Like when I came out to the living room one Sunday morning to investigate the “silence”. There she was in front of the heat register with my wallet, slipping the credit cards, drivers license and museum memberships through the narrow slots. In a building with hundreds of apartments, who knew where that vent led. Luckily, it was horizontal. With a screwdriver and some chipped paint, everything was retrieved.

    Hahaha, great post.

And yes, you definitely need to be careful. Any time it gets quiet, something mischevious is in the works.

    :) Smiles.. Mark

Oh — the frightening sound of silence. I remember that the minute I would become aware of it I would panic, in fear of what I might find. But usually it was something merely hilarious, like this.

What a bad hat! (Said with much affection, of course.) I especially love the picture where he’s looking like, ‘who DID this? which way did he go! Rascally scoundrel!’

This is great! I love moments like this one.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one who lets my baby play around the corner. Her room is downstairs, so I let her play and listen for the noises to make sure everything’s all right while I’m in the kitchen or the den or the dining room.

I think we spend so much time with our babies, we know their noises intimately and what to listen for. The moment I hear anything foreign, I come running!
