Feeling a little off kilter

Posted on | February 22, 2006 |

Everything felt slightly out of step today, the way it sometimes happens on TV when the image is broadcast seconds before the audio, so the actors are moving and speaking but their words come trailing after and nothing quite lines up. Even the weather felt like this: snow fell hard in the afternoon for about twenty minutes, and then the sun came out exuberantly.

I’m in the midst of working on more paintings for my cafe art show. This is the background for one. I’m painting gold finches in flight that will wing their way across this surface, but somehow the texture of the background as it is right now captured my mood. Pithy, a little dark, a little murky.

I’ll post more when I know how both turn out (*chuckles*).

I love that painting just as it is. It’s as you said, “Pithy, a little dark, a little murky.” As soon as I saw it, I fell in love with it. I used to work in alternative theatre and my heart really is in those things that betray deep emotion and darkness.

Can’t wait to see what it becomes (although seriously, I’d be happy with it if you never touched it again).

Off-kilter has been my modus operandi for weeks now…although mine feels like it goes beyond audio delay…sometimes I feel like I’ve wandered onto the entirely wrong SET! ;) Like Elaine said, I like this painting already just as it is.

Off-kilter…that’s just the word I’ve been looking for to describe the past several weeks. O February! Are you not gone yet? Don’t let March hit you on the ass on the way out!

Love the colors of this painting/background. Reminds me of 2 favorite painters ~ Rothko and Robert Ryman. I can’t remember a time when I was anticipating/waiting for Spring as much as I am.

i was saying something so similar just yesterday - just a bit off here too. your painting is perfect for those days when “my head becomes a condemned church with a ceiling of bats.” hope things all straighten out for you - the finished painting sounds like it will be beautiful!

I have days like this. You captured your day well, so you could run with this painting or you could triumph over it by illustrating yourself sailing beyond it with goldfinches. But, then, that would be my take on it, not yours :) I love the texture and colors; it’s our current landscape.

Like Elaine, I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. To me, it looks like everything that isn’t Bean: a subtractive map. My experience has been that the depth to which I honor the darkness in my self is the height to which the lightness can rise. I respond to your painting as a delineation of the part of you that is usually submerged, hidden, and — in that sense — dishonored.

I feel it too. Must be the weather. I need some sunshine. Your painting is beautiful thus far.

i’m with you on the off-kilterness. the weather outside can’t decide whether to snow or just be sunny, and i have to randomly go to KY for a meeting tomorrow. Who randomly goes to KY? This has led to my off kilterness, but I’m unable to paint anything remotely as wonderful as you have to express my state. Looking forward to seeing more things as the art show date gets close!

    your synch is off…
or you have a digital feed issue,
or it could be that your satellite downlink is experiencing bandwith congestion -
    (married to a tv/film guy)
apparently it isn’t effecting your painting as I love this and it’s only a background?

blackbird–what exactly does it mean to have one’s synch be off? It’s very apt… but I’d like to correct it.

awesome background. even if it’s dark and murky it still holds it’s own special kind of beauty.

I really like the texture on the side of the painting, but I’m looking forward to the finches! Sending you lots of good thoughts to get your kilter back in the right place. Just think of all you’ve accomplished - you astonish me with your energy and how much you DO - run mile upon mile, work in your new house, mother the Bean, create amazing art. You’re amazing! So take that, Mr. Kilter!

I wonder if my off kilteryness is caused by winter time. I always feel off kilter-like this time of year. Hang in there. I love your background and I can’t wait to see the finches. Good luck.

I like the pattern of paint on the far left-side. Good luck, can’t wait to see the final product.

    Oh Christina,

It’s no wonder given all you are juggling right now– take a mug of hot tea and sit with your feet up for as long as you need to. it will all come back together– I promise.
