Decisively NOT spring, but still good

Posted on | February 26, 2006 |

Did I say something about spring? Right. It snowed ALL DAY yesterday. Beautiful, sparkling snow, but snow none the less. I actually am not complaining. I like things to be decisive. It’s the waffling that gets me: almost winter and almost not. Cold enough to see your breath, but not cold enough to tell the crocuses to wait. So now we have snow, and I’m fine with that. At least it really feels like winter.

We went to the Mardi Gras parade downtown. The streets were choked with foot traffic. Revelers in gloves and mittens screamed for beads. Bean napped the entire time—even when a float impersonating a barge went by, blaring a barge horn.

Later, one my favorite people in the whole world drove four hours through the snow to come see us. She is the same amazing human being who arrived on day four after Bean was born when everyone had left and all the excitement had supposedly died down—but really I was too sore to walk or do laundry, DH had a fever of 101 and was vomiting with the same evil stomach virus that I’d had before going into labor, and I was a mess of tears and exhaustion. She came from Boston and took one look at us and started cleaning. THIS is the kind of friend you want in your life. The kind that takes one look at your exhausted face and instead of ogling uselessly at your baby during the five minutes he’s asleep, does your dishes instead. Oh how I adore her.

So, she arrived in the middle of the snowstorm and we drank many, many cups of spicy chai tea with milk and ate oodles of cookies. Life is good.

You realize this is hilarious, right?…a Mardis Gras parade in the SNOW! I love it! As beautiful and festive as the Mardis Gras photos are, I ADORE the last photo…maybe because you’re kissing him in the spot where I love to kiss on my man. ;) And what a friend to have. I’ll soon (in the next week or two) be meeting up with my best friend from high school…and I’m sure J will roll his eyes and laugh…because we’ll instantly turn into 18-year-olds… :)

FUN! I wonder what spicy chai mixed with a little bourbon tastes like…hmmmmm….have you ever tried beignets? I’m starting to rave beignets….
A friend like that is a treasure. I wish every new mom had such a friend to help out after labor (I’m one of the lucky ones; I had lots of help). Cheers to your visit together!

It’s been waffling a lot here, too, weather-wise, but today? Blue SO BLUE skies, bright sun, ALL DAY! Take that, snow! Melt, damn you, melt! :)

the photos here are superb, christina. so alive! and yay for those special friends. I have one of those and am missing her tonight (especially after reading this post).

p.s. atlanta weather is the worst in terms of waffling. we are always in between. cold and grey and rainy– just cold enough to be miserable though not cold enough for snow. the midwestern girl in me misses snow somethin awful.

I had no idea people celebrated Mardi Gras that far north - and in the snow! Love the picture of the DH, I love how I can see glimpses of the Bean in his face.

And your friend sounds truly priceless. I’ll have to remember her gift to you the next time someone I know has a little one. But I so love uselessly ogling the baby!
