A little help, please
Posted on | November 27, 2006 |
What might one give a guy this holiday season? I need some ideas…both for big gifts and tiny ones (Dh & I are uber cheesy; we exchange little treasures every day of advent–a tradition left over from my childhood). I always hate myself when it’s December 23 and I haven’t thought of anything and end up opting for sweaters. What are you contemplating for the men in your lives?

Does hubby enjoy music? My other half is drooling over the iPod Nanos. They are really light weight and would be great for working out/running/hiking. (not really a super “small” gift price-wise, though)
A super cheap/cheesy could be a home spa night. You draw the bath, light the candles, pick the music, (find the babysitter) and “prepare” the meal. Just a very relaxing evening for two.
Ultra “tiny” could include a favorite sweet, baked goodies . . . does he really enjoy cooking? maybe some little used or expensive spices that you might not ordinarily pick up . . . a Matchbox version of his favorite car, a CD mix compilation of songs “from” your relationship . . . a favorite picture framed for his office or personal space.
Hmm, if I think of any more, I’ll come back.
Good luck, and have fun coming up with things.

This is always so tough, isn’t it? We did the Advent thing last year- I gave things like tiny candies (you sweeten my life) and even a pedicure (he loved it!). This year I’m handknitting Hubby his gifts, but I am also giving him a “valet,” which is a fancy way of saying a box to put his stuff in (like wallet and keys and change, etc) at the end of the day. I ordered it from Red Envelope, which has lots of interesting ideas.
Good luck!!!

Good grief, e, that was AWESOME. Anders is getting a camera tripod and a forehead flashlight. (which makes me laugh every time I think about it)

Write him a book, a page a day. By the time it’s Christmas, it completes.

Some gifts I’ve given my husband:
- a plain silver band-like bracelet, with the words from one of our favourite songs engraved on the inside (”not a trace of doubt in my mind i’m in love” — can you guess the song?)
- a watch from both my daughter and I, engraved in the back (it was for his first father’s day, but still, you might be able to work it in)
- he’s an artist, so a small artist’s travel kit — brushes that you fill with water for water colours, a moleskine notebook, some charcoals — that he can toss in his car or backpack and take with him anywhere
- he’s a mountainbiker, so I gave him a personal gps system
- his large gift for Christmas last year was a cycling vacation in Canada with one of his best friends — the brochure was in his stocking
Hope that helps,
K.

Every year, my husband and I exchange cheesy gifts too. We often do something we are good at…for him drawing (I’ve gotten calendars, comic books, etc…) and for me writing. I’ve written him short stories for the past couple of years…intimate funny stories about particular events.
Other gifts which have went over particularly well have been drawing classes, gallery membership, tickets for concerts, special books, engraved swiss army knife, Star Wars Box Set and once…just once…he got me…wrapped in mini lights…and nothing else (I was a poor student….I couldn’t afford much…but I think it was one of his favorite gifts).

Okay, I am getting the BEST ideas from these comments!
This year I am getting Beaux a watch, I think - he has specifically asked for one, but not a fancy one, just a regular, not-too-expensive watch. That, I can do.
There are also so many good movies out and coming out that we’re talking about movie tickets for Christmas presents! That way, we get the experience as well as the movie.

Alex enjoys a good cigar once a week while he piddles in the garage and listens to “This American Life” on NPR. I am going to get him a new cigar cutter as one gift. The other thing we are doing is getting a flat screen TV to hang on the wall - it will be the BIG present to both of us. We talked each other into this by using the excuse that our mastiff (now 9 months and 100 lbs) is getting so big that we want to reduce clutter in the house. I don’t suppose that you have a mastiff or lion roaming the house to use to make excuses to buy things, do you? You should try it … it helps. You can borrow mine - just get a towel ready for the slobber.

Well, Sunday husband stood up and his button was undone. He said his pants were a couple sizes too small (understatement). Yesterday, he had his shirt untucked. Why? Because the fly didn’t zip up anymore. Yup, he’s getting pants for Christmas. I can’t take it anymore. It’s like being married to a high schooler, not a going-on-30 year old.

I think that is so sweet you exchange gifts every day of advent. I’ve given my hubby two of his presents already — partly because he really needed them and we’re on a tight budget this year. So, needless to say, Christmas will be a little anti-climatic this go around!

Couple of ideas:
1. Have a tree planted in his name
2. Zoo membership
3. Puppy
4. Make him a music video w/pictures of you, Bean and him during the year (if you don’t know how to do this I would be happy to help you — just email me)
5. Volunteer for a project that he would find meaningful (e.g., serve soup in a homeless shelter, work on a habitat for humanity project, etc.) in his honor
6. Tickets for a show that you’ve been meaning to see but somehow never make the time to order the tickets for (last year I did Second City tickets — big hit)
7. Make him anything — home made gifts are best — and your paintings and artwork are exquisite!

Just found your website via surfing the web. I love it! You take some great pictures and your posts and writings are truly inspirational!

This year I am doing something like the book that Avalon suggested, but instead it is mini-stories about us with accompanying photos (both snapshots of us and more pro photos that I took over time).
I also recommend buying him a selection of “must-reads”- in other words, a few books that changed your life with a little info inside on WHY this book was so influential in your life. If nothing else, it is the gift of understanding his spouse a bit better.
For a very little treat, I once made oragami for the boy. Each oragami had a beautiful quotation inside from a poem or book. He still has all the little doves I made him lines up on a shelf.
I’m all out. But I love everyone else’s ideas too!

Oh, also! Sigg makes the BEST water bottles. They’re aluminum and come in very cool designs. And memberships to anything are cool, I think- I’ve done a membership to the Art Museum, the Japanese Gardens, and the Zoo in our city.
