The view (and the most random, grumpy post ever)
Posted on | December 19, 2006 |
Here are a bunch of photos I took the other night when the light was doing the most incredible things. On my way home the stormy sky was suddenly ripped open and sun burst through, right in front of the rain—creating the most remarkable and vibrant rainbow I have ever seen. Of course, I didn’t get the camera until after it had faded (rainbows never look as beautiful as they do in real life anyway), but I did walk out onto the cold damp grass to see raindrops hanging like bright jewels from every twig and branch.
I can make no guarantees about where this post will go because I’m sick with an awful stomach bug—the second time this year, and I’m hating every minute of it. My head feels like it’s in a vice, and I feel utter anguish that I’ve left my class to some poor substitute the week before vacation. The kids are so excitable right now; we’ve discussed where Santa lives about a hundred times, and still, the conversation seems to wend its way there. As they terrorize the sub, I’ll spend tomorrow on the couch with Bean patting my cheek and saying, Mama, sick, or more urgently, Mama, get up!
I got whatever I have from DH who woke up yesterday morning feeling sick. To make matters worse, the garbage disposal chose yesterday to jam, which in turn caused the dishwasher to spew its backwash into the sink drain and the sink to start filling. Lovely, no? In a moment of flawless teamwork, a very feverish DH and I worked together to find and remove the pieces of broken plate that had fallen into it, and then, as he retired to the couch threatening to faint, I had to wrestle the darn thing back into place. Sort of like wrestling a greased pig made out of metal. I reinstalled it, to my credit (all kudos are welcome—it was the most disgusting, awkward, frustrating thing I’ve done in a long while!)
This is possibly the least festive I’ve felt at the approach of the holidays, EVER. We bought wreathes the other day, but besides that and baking cookies, our house is decidedly un-holiday like. Oh dear, I’ll stop moping when my stomach stops feeling like someone is excavating it with a child’s sized plastic bulldozer.

I can definitely relate to the stomach bug as I’ve been home today with it. Ugh Hope you’re better soon.

Many congratulations on the triumph over the evil garbage disposal - you should be very proud!!
Porter has a virus that he has been fighting on and off since Thanksgiving - while talking to friends and family all over the country I have realized that it must be going around all over. Feel better soon.

Feel better very soon! And you ROCK with the disposal, I would have cried in such a moment as that.

Your photographs are absolutely amazing. The second one is breathtaking…I just want to stare at the raindrop and the reflection in it.
I’m sorry you’ve been so sick. I’m getting over a nasty bug myself…I sympathize. Hope you’re feeling better really soon.

The “bah-humbug” disease must be going around. For two weeks, I’ve had 14 very large plastic bins of holiday decorations piled up in my living room, but haven’t felt compelled to open the bins and start decorating. I’m taking life day by day (and just barely getting through) and today I apologized to my kids (14, 12 and 9) for not being more in the holiday spirit. I feel bad because I’m certainly not making it memorable for them … but life as a whole is just crazy for everyone!

You are Wonder Woman, for sure. I would be totally helpless in the face of a broken garbage disposal, thankfully we don’t use ours a whole lot.
Now go take care of your sick tummy (oh germy DH! to the guest bed for him!) as Santa must come, one way or the other! I can’t wait to wrap up things at work tomorrow and be totally free for all the holiday visting this weekend holds. Sending you lots of healthy thoughts! And of course, your pictures are devastatingly beautiful.

I have no Christmas decorations up, no lights, no tree. Nothing. Not even cookies. And not because I don’t believe in celebrating Christmas, but because I am so incredibly busy and December has flown by in the blink of an eye.
And MAJOR kudos to you, woman, for re-installing the garbage disposal. Not a task I would, myself, ever want to have to tackle while feeling ill to begin with.

I hope you feel better in no time at all! You are too incredible of a person to get the stomach bug-especially twice in one season. Things like the flu and the stomache bug should really be reserved for all the mean, hurtful, yucky people in the world! Hee hee!
This is my first time to respond to your blog; however, I have been reading it for a month now. I have your blog page bookmarked under favorites. I am going to try and check your blog daily to see if you have posted anything new. When I find a new entry, it’s like getting mail in my mailbox from an old friend! You can’t wait to open it. I want to read all of your blogs and start at the beginning. You have an incredible gift of storytelling and commenting in a refreshing and insightful way about ordinary things in life.
Your pictures are amazing. I am a photographer too. You have inspired me to start taking more pictures of simple, ordinary things that we take for granted everyday. Thank you!
I hope your holidays are blessed. My husband and I are in a transitional period of our lives. He is living in Nashville and I am living in Mississippi until May when my son graduates from High School. So, we are renting a furnished house from a couple who are traveling nurses. All of my Christmas stuff or should I say “junk” is in storage. The only Christmas decorations I have out are some “blue balls” I got at WalMart to put here and there. I don’t even have a wreath on my door! I did finally bake some Christmas cookies and that helped. But in all actuality, I have felt so free this Christmas. I think the things and stuff of this world makes us slaves to it.
Well, I am sure you never expected this long of a reply from anyone! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to reply. God bless you and your precious family and happy holidays!
