masthead
Posted on | January 6, 2007 |
Time for a new masthead. I have no clue what I’m doing, but sometimes it is utterly satisfying to spend several late-night hours playing with photoshop. If I knew what half the tools did, just think how smokin’ I’d be! Here are a couple of older mastheads that I’ve had up.
Today: breakfast out, somewhere, because there is neither milk nor bread in our empty, empty fridge. Then to the craft store to buy frames for the last of my paintings to go up in the show, if I’m still allowed to hang them–tardy as I am with the whole thing. Somehow, I really did manage to forget all about it. Oh, and before I forget, check out the new gallery format I’m trying. Better. Not great, but better, right? Anyone want to design me a real one? Pretty please?
One more thing, Bean’s second birthday is coming up in a month. I want to have a fun little shindig for some of his little toddler friends, and their parents, but I’m worthless at envisioning such events. Help. What are some good, low-stress, fun things to do at a two-year old’s birthday? (There may not be snow…there should be snow, but the weather has been wacky this year!)

I love your mastheads. I, too, am a photoshop novice and wish I knew half the stuff I could do with it. I think your fall/early winter masthead is my favorite, but I love your new quote!
Birthdays, I think at that age, the best thing to do is have something at your house for families. Keep it low-key, just have lots of good food and drink, and let the kids play. Cake and ice cream, and you’re done. They’re kind of young for party games or crafts at that age. I used to make it more for the adults, so they would want to hang around, and it’s more of a celebration of the life of the child than a party for the child’s enjoyment. Make sense? Have fun!!

pancake breakfast in pj’s party. the kids love it- most kids that age I know are better in the morning. The parents love it because it doesn’t cut their day in half and they don’t have to dress the kids-and then they can take them home for their nap.

2-year-olds don’t need a lot of extra stimulation at a birthday party…it gets harder as they get older so don’t stress yourself out about it now.
Presents, cake and ice cream are usually more than enough with the excitement of guests and candles. Maybe a pin-the-tail on the donkey type game or musical chairs or duckduckgoose or if you’re up for it, hire a little bouncy castle.

We did a piƱata for Lily’s second and made cupcakes with frosting laid out for kids to decorate the cakes with. That’s about the extent of the planned activities. Seriously, you don’t need much for a 2yo! See our photos and whatnot here:

I like the new masthead, but think the one with the eyes is my favorite (no surprise if you see my masthead, which is much less artful than yours!)
I just got Photoshop Elements and it’s totally overwhelming for me. I’m so impressed with what you can do with Photoshop as a novice!
I LOVE the pancake party idea! I think any thing centered around a kid friendly meal is great for a two year old birthday party. A fun thing to do is roll paper out on the tables and let the kids have at it with either crayons, markers, or finger paint.
then eat on the “decorated” tablecloth.

A play-doh table, if you have play doh. My two year old loves it and it occupies for a long time. Or a little table covered in a sheet of paper from a big roll with crayons out. Another hit. Other than that- snack and you’re good. Other ideas- Music is a good thing if you have any dancing toddlers, bean bag toss… My son is 2 1/2 and we didn’t open presents at his friends or his party just because of the “sharing issues” we anticipated. Have fun. Happy Birthday to Bean. (BTW, you don’t know me. I discovered your blog through Ali Edwards once and I’ve been hooked. Awesome writing and I appreciate and can relate to the feelings you share. Thank you.) Jenny

The less you plan the better — but I did do this for my two year old, and he and his buddies loved it. We bought two lightweight disposable paper tablecloths. Next we blew up a bunch of balloons. Then we created a bag for the balloons out of the tablecloths — and taped them to the ceiling. Tape a long peice of yarn into one of the seams of the tablecloth so that it can hang down. At the appropriate time, Bean can pull on the string to rip the tablecloth down from the ceiling, and out tumbles all the baloons. It’s lovely.

Do you ever call Bean . . . Jelly Bean or Green Bean?

When my kids turned two we had lots of coloring pages printed off the web, a pin the tail on type of game for those kids not too shy, and the big hit: pass the whatever. For my son’s party in October it was pass the (small) pumpkin. For a party in December it was pass the present. You can pass anything and they will think it’s a blast. Just pray very hard and very long that you don’t have to have a Dora the Explorer party http://howyoudoin.blog.com/2007/1/ EVER.
Good luck to you and Happy Bday Bean!

I love the idea of a pajama party in the morning - there’s nothing cuter than kids in jammies! I would chime in to keep it simple, don’t stress too much. Also, blowing bubbles at some point will be much for all of them - and that’s an inside or outside activity.
Your masthead is gorgeous - love the pink! One day I will have Photoshop and be able to tool around…for now, I depend on the kindness of others!!

Love the new masthead - the picture of you looks great, and the pink flowers are very spring.
I actually found your blog by typing “one year old boy birthday” into google (almost a year ago) to find ideas for Porter’s first b-day party. I landed on your 1 year old Bean letter and I have been hooked ever since. Funny, huh?

Yep…lovin’ the new masthead!
It’s been a long time since I threw a two-year-old birthday party but the best one of the three was when we fingerpainted with pudding!
