Underpants!
Posted on | January 9, 2007 |
His first pair! He ran around the kitchen wildly, high stepping, stomping, grinning. He asked to inspect Mama’s underpants and Daddy’s underpants. He pulled his up, and pulled them down. We took a special trip to the mall tonight to purchase them, as it seems, Bean is ready for potty training.
Gasp. How did we possibly get here, from here? All the cliche’s collide in my mind. How quickly they grow, really. I’m still having trouble picturing what diaperless is like. And of course I need advice. Spill please.
The details: after the gym two nights ago, waiting for DH I gave Bean a cup and showed him how to work the drinking fountain. He was in heaven, and six cups of water and a wet shirt later, DH showed up, we drove home, and I striped the little guy down to his birthday suit. But then, being the utterly lazy mama I am, I decided that the forty five minutes of dinner and and playtime before bed were not enough to warrent the hassel of daipering, so I put him in longjohns and showed him the potty. Causually, I mentioned, “If you need to go potty, you can sit on this one like a big boy.” Then I went about cleaning up the living room, and holy crap, the kid was sitting on the potty and GOING.
He was wildly excited. I was wildly excited. He proceeded to go like six or seven times (all the water!) and each time was delighted to show me his production, and to flush with abandon.
Since then, both nights we’ve had successes–and an amazing poop on the potty! Really. And he wiped. (Apparently all of the times he’s made himself at home in the bathroom while we’re occupied on the white thrown have paid off…worth it, but still. Just once it’d be nice to do my business without having someone try to shove toilet paper down behind me before I’m through.)
Of course, there were a few accidents, but what a way to start, right? What should I do next? For car travel? Night time? Trips out?
You web mamas rock my world.

That’s really cool! I watched my sister-in-law attempt to potty train her son and it was not fun. This task is still a work in progress. Sounds like your kid is well on his way…

Woo hoo Bean! With our kiddo we didn’t stress it at all simply because it was one of the most terrifying things for us first time parents to deal with, so we just let it happen on its own. At two years old we just started putting him on the pot at the “right times” ie when he would usually go because he was interested about our potty times. We kept him in a pull-up at night and during long car trips, but I was so estatic that we never had a #2 accident. It took about a year to get through the night time pull-ups because we just never made it an issue, plus he is a nighttime water hog. So I say keep a casual attitude about it, but super celebrate the hits and don’t make a big deal about the misses. Mister Bean sure did pay attention! =)

Keep a potty in the car. Saves money on the pull ups.

The first thing you can do is have him come over and have a little talk with Jack! Just kidding! Congratulations!

Congratulations Bean! I always sing this song, everytime George goes on the potty (I did it with Aidan too, he is 6 now)
Pee Pee on the Paw- Tay!
Pee Pee on the Paw- Tay!
Pee Pee on the Paw- Tay!
We dance around a giggle and clap.
I love potty training. For real.
How exciting for all of you.

Oh, I didn’t do this with my kids but my friend did this with her son and he loved it.
She put cheerios in the toilet and told him to aim his pee in the centre of the cheerios. Peeing became a fun game for him.
Funny, the way all parents come up with their own individual and unique ways of celebrating and empowering our kids pees and poos.

Something I learned after my son was traumatized in the bathroom at the store. . . Put a little bit of toilet paper over the red light of an automatic flusher to keep it from going off while he’s trying to go.
Congrats!

whhoooo hooo way to go!!
Payton was such a delight to potty train as well..(I’m crossing my fingers for Nathan to be the same.. but I doubt we’ll get that lucky)
We used “potty treats” for Payton (actually Andes candies..those little thin mint ones) So every time Payton went on the pot he got a treat and still at almost 7 years old he refers back to the days when he got rewarded for using the potty…

Holy cow!! That IS exciting!! I hope it goes that well for Porter. Way to go, Bean … and Mommy!!

that is exactly how they say to potty train, GIVE THEM TONS TO DRINK and leave them half nakee so they can practice more. just keep giving him drinks tons. and let him keep going. awesome job!
okay with my first daughter she was such a heavy sleeper she wet the bed til age 5. my 2nd daughter was dry at 9 months old on. it depends on the kid. i would put him to sleep in underwear so he thinks he is doing it. then maybe slip a pull up on over the underwear for a just in case? unless you notice he is still soaked in the morning. then just do a diaper….after he falls asleep. of course these are just my opinions. you have to do what works for you.
i would keep a potty chair in the car for those times when you have absolutely nowhere to go. and wipes. lots of em. and extra clothes. lots of those too. but for a few days i just would plan on not going anywhere til he has it completely down! awesome work!

We kept a potty in the car for a long time (and I suspect we will again before long) to handle the out and about stuff. Every kid is different. Like, Lily refused to wear diapers at night and we just went through about a week of switching out towels in the night and changing sheets in the morning. Then she was done. Others need to keep dipes on for a while to handle night time. Just follow your instincts and do NOT push it. If he feels like it’s all his doing, he’ll stick with it, I suspect.
YAY! So much fun.
OH, and I was totally not looking forward to it until it happened and then it was awesome. Go with it.

Congratulations to making it to such a big step!

Wow! Congrats! Keep up the good work. Just keep him nekkid (or in underpants) and drinking and going every 30-60 minutes. I’d use pullups at nighttime and naptime for a while. And keep your sense of humor. My dd trained herself like this. Awesome!
If you’re worried about taking him places, you can get those plastic underwear to put over his training pants so that if he goes, it won’t soak his clothes. I used these with ds but not with dd. With her I just kept putting her on the potty whenever we go to where we were going.
Good luck!

Congrats! My son, now 3, just decided to use the potty one day as well. And never looked back. And neither did I. I kept him in big boy underwear and simply put a waterproof liner on his bed at night for accidents. For the accidents he had I came up with a plan: http://memoirsofamoorings.typepad.com/memoirs_of_a_moorings/2006/10/potty_ooops.html. And when we go out, I find out where the bathroom is FIRST. Every kid is different, but encouragement works all the way around!

You have hit the mothering jackpot - a potty trained kid! I know the GBK is still working on this and can do it in theory, but still relies on Pullups some of the time. But I am so excited for you and the Bean! What a smart boy he is. (Just like his mama, of course.)

Wow! I am not a mom yet, but I do send a celebratory FLUSH to you for this wonderful potty experience! Go Bean : )
