Morning blur

Posted on | March 14, 2007 |

The morning is smudged with rainy dark. Gradually the snow melts, an the temperatures climb. Along the roads, silver buckets hang from maple trees now. My fingers move slowly this morning, making up sleep debt always takes a few nights. My body still feels somehow separate, as though I’m above it slightly, directing it as I would a marionette.

Bean is sick with a cold—the first time he’s been sick all winter. I wish I could wrap him up and snuggle him all day, but he’d protest. So instead I taught him how to play patty cake and he loved it. He went around the house singing “Paddy cake paddy cake baker man,” over and over again and grinning. Anyone know any other fun hand games for small kiddos?

Oh and also, the potted palm in my bedroom isn’t happy. It has big elephant-ear fronds, and is in a smallish bowl. Anyone out there with a green thumb? Do palms like water, or do they like to be dry? Sun or less so?

I hope your monkey is doing well soon. It’s kinda sad when wee ones don’t feel well…there’s not much you can do to help but make sure they are loved.

I have a palm-type tree in my bedroom and I’ve found that it enjoys bright (although not direct) light and relatively dry conditions. But when I do water it…I REALLY water it. It’s been alive for 2 years…so I guess I’m doing something right.

Oh and I also take it outside during the summer…for a treat….:*) I do that to almost all of my plants. I’d like to think it makes them happy.

Oh Itsy Bitsy Spider is wonderful!

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout.
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain
So the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again.

For the first (and last) line, alternately touch the thumb of one hand to the index finger of the other. For “Down came the rain” hold both hands up and wiggle the fingers as you lower the hands. For “washed the spider out” sweep the hands to the side. For the third line bring both hands up and then to the sides to sweep out a semi-circle (the sun).

    Love You Blog!

Sorry little bean is not feeling well. Porter LOVES the itsy-bitsy spider, but you probably know that one. I am trying to teach him head shoulders knees and toes (knees and toes).

With the palm, does it maybe need a bigger pot?? It may just need what we all do - the end of winter and the beginning of naturally warm, longer days to spread our branches and leaves.

Do you know the hand one where you have him hold his hand out with the fingers spread and you run a finger along them from the pinky toward the thumb and you as you do you sing “Johnny Johnny Johnny” at the top of each finger and then as you slide down between the pointer and thumb you say “Whoops! Johnny Johnny” and then “Whoops! Johnny Johnny” on the way back? No? Yeah, I didn’t think so. :D

My daughter and I sing this one during bath with her rubber ducks but it is fun all the time:
The ducks go by (make hand into a duck bill) quack quack quack quack
And things go up (point up)
And things go down (point down)
and the world goes around (spin fingers around eachother) and around and around
And God* lives on (point to heaven)
Can you dig it (make digging motion with hands) can you dig can you dig it
Whooooo (throw both arms and hands in the air)

*if you don’t believe in God you can say “and we all go on” with a thumbs up….

don’t know if that makes any sense and it is meant to be done in a sing song way like paddy cake.
I hope your little man passes through the cold quickly.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider song is a big hit with my little guy. It is so cute when he does the “out came the sun” motion!!

    Said as you gently draw circles around your childs open palm;

“Round and Round the garden, like a teddy bear.
A-one step (gradually step your fingers up the arm), A-two step (gradually step your fingers further up the arm), and tickle him under there!” (finally tickling under the armpit)

My children loved this one, especially if you drag out the suspense before the tickle.

    Have fun!

Sorry Bean is sick. I hope for his speedy recovery.

My little one always enjoyed the itsy-bitsy spider and where is thumbkin? and head, shoulders, knees and toes.

Is your palm in a big enough bowl?

Itsy bitsy spider is a big hit; wheels on the bus is even bigger. Hope Bean is feeling better and you get some better rest soon!

The only things I can think of is The Itsy Bitsy Spider and Zacchaeus Was A Wee Little Man. I’ve found that my 2 year old Sunday School kids do much better with songs with hand motions. (Oh! And Deep and Wide!)

Maybe the cold coming on is why the Beaniest Boy was so miserable the other night? Bless his heart. And yours, too, of course. You deserve all the chocolate crossaint and fruit tarts in the world!

Where is Thumbkin? (Do you know that one?)

No idea about the plant. I have three african violets — one that I try to take care of and two that I ignore. Guess which two are healthier?

Oh, good Itsy Bitsy Spider’s here - The Wheels On the Bus is more of a song, but my grandgirls loved doing that one with hand motions, and there’s lots of verses, so since they like to do it over and over, at least you can have the variety of a different thing happening with each verse.

The palm might just be in shock — didn’t you say you just got it? I definitely find that that kind of plant likes a warm room and not too much water.
