Congratulations! I look forward to hunting down the magazine so I can read it!
Are you and DH travelers? For our wedding, I gave my husband a mounted map of the states, to put push pins in each time we visited somewhere. This might be good if you do a state map or a world map too.
Also, what with all the turning to a greener life, you could donate, or plant trees in his name. I used to do that every year for my then-boyfriend, now-husband’s birthday: plant fifty trees in his honor.

You. So. Rock. Congratulations. I love when good people get the attention and kudos they deserve.

Okay, here’s what I would do. Find a nice mountain bike trail that you know and love (you need to make sure to find one he likes). Get a babysitter. Load the bikes on the roof and take him to the trailhead. Let the stress melt off on the bike then enjoy a nice little refreshing lunch (or dinner) at a cafe he just loves. Bring him home and serve that cake you secretly made (bought, in my case) and blow out ALL those candles with the help of the little man who loves DH and calls him Daddy.
Not fair! I want to be able to read it, too, but I can’t get that magazine here. waah! The editor said such lovely things and I’m sure you deserve every one of them.
How about a treasure hunt for his birthday present which ends with 2 tickets to a show or a game or a concert?
Wow! I just read that beautiful piece and didn’t realize the connection! Blog worlds can get so anonymous. It was the first Mothering Magazine I have ever purchased, in honor of my brand-new first pregnancy. I’ve wanted to have reason to buy that magazine for a long time (have always just looked at friend’s back issues) and it was treat to encounter your piece.
Thanks!
It really is a beautiful piece and I am so very proud of you!
As for birthday’s, I’m currently feeling a wee bit bitter about mine, so I’m not the right person to ask. I will tell you that you should let him sleep in and take a nice shower and not make him do anything he doesn’t want to do. THAT would have made my birthday a good one. Sigh.
Congratulations, Christina! I’m not sure I’m ready to purchase a copy of Mothering Magazine, but I’ll certainly read your piece at the magazine rack! I can’t wait to see it.
Congratulations, Christina — that’s high praise indeed!!
Hmmm…birthday ideas isn’t my specialty; I can barely figure out what to get my own DH for his birthday. Good luck coming up with something great…and a happy birthday to him, too.
Congratulations on the piece. I won’t get to read it, but if it is anything like your writing here, it deserves the praise. Well done!
No birthday ideas. Sorry!

evocative.. that is how I think of your writing - I love that magazine - the Portland mothers bible when I lived there. Can hardly wait to read it.
Birthday: art? man jewellery :)?
i wish i could give you as simple an idea as mine…being that my dh is returning from iraq on his birthday. we haven’t seen each other in 7 months and have only 2 weeks to catch up before he leaves for 5 more months. for special occasions we like reserving a room at the westin, basking in the luxuries, going out to a fabulous meal at our favorite restaurant, ordering milk and cookies through late night room service, sleeping in and waking the next day for a late breakfast and massages. we decided sometime ago to stop buying gifts…so these are the kind of gifts we like giving to each other. moments away. together. hope that sparks an idea in you…
I am so proud of you! I can’t wait to go out and buy a copy - my very first! I hope my local bookstore has it…
I know that editor’s comment is more precious than gold to you.
As for the darling DH - I like Elaine’s idea - don’t ask him to do any chores, let him sleep late (if that is what he likes), make his favorite meal. Go on a date and hold hands. I’m no good at my own husband’s birthday, except that he gets spoiled with yummy food…
Yay, Christina! That must feel amazing to hear and to see. From what I experience here your writing is very, very special.
As for birthday - I think some of the suggestions here were really clever. I’m slow this morning and have an empty head for this sort of thing. But, Happy Birthday, Christina’s DH!!
Congratulations! That was a lovely comment/blurb for your article and I look forward to reading it. I no longer subscribe, but I was an avid reader back when my babies were young (the youngest is now 18 so it’s been awhile) but I still browse through it sometimes at the library for old times sake.
I enjoy reading your very open, honest, and descriptive writing. Thanks for sharing.

Hurray!! So funny - I just saw that magazine on the shelves at Barnes and Noble - but with my fear of things going wrong with this pregnancy like they did the last I didn’t get it because I was afraid to jinx myself. BUT NOW … I can consider your article a good omen and get it!! Congratulations!!
As for DH’s b-day … we have a tradition for our birthdays and anniversary: we go downtown and enjoy raw oysters and hushpuppies (a southern thing) and then spend the rest of the afternoon walking and shopping, eating gelato; we always buy something special to remember the day. Maybe a day like that dedicated to him and how special he is to you.
I’m a grandmother who read Mothering 25 years ago and loved it. Will be reading your piece sipping on coffee at the local bookstore. Congratulations on such great kudos!
Congratluations on your article being “one of the most evocative pieces [they’ve] published.” That’s a big wow, and must be so affirming for you! You certainly deserve to be published and to be recognized for you verbal alchemy.
